- What is the difference between private.vuestash.com and app.vuestash.com?
- private.vuestash.com is the free, fully offline version — no login, no registration, all data stays on your device. app.vuestash.com is the cloud-powered version that adds automatic bank sync and cross-device sync. Both use the same interface; the difference is where your data lives and which extra features are available.
- Is VueStash really free?
- Yes. private.vuestash.com and the desktop app are always free with no time limit. The free version supports up to 4 accounts and 10 recurring items. Purchasing a license removes those limits and unlocks additional features — but the core app is yours at no cost.
- What does a license unlock?
- A license unlocks: unlimited accounts, unlimited recurring transactions, multi-band budgets, data export (CSV and JSON), the full theme editor, and — on app.vuestash.com — automatic bank sync and cross-device cloud sync. One license key works on both the local and cloud versions.
- If I buy a license, can I use it on both versions?
- Yes — a single license key works on private.vuestash.com, app.vuestash.com, and the desktop app. You are free to switch between versions at any time.
- What is Ask VueStash, and do I need to pay for it?
- Ask VueStash is an AI assistant built into the app. It's available for free in all versions. You supply your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini — VueStash does not provide or proxy AI access. Your key is stored locally on your device and sent only to the AI provider you choose.
- Why do I need to bring my own API key for the AI?
- VueStash is designed for privacy and transparency. Rather than routing your financial questions through a VueStash-operated AI service, you connect directly to the AI provider of your choice. This means your data goes only where you decide, and you are never locked into a VueStash subscription for AI access.
- How does automatic bank sync work?
- Bank sync is powered by Teller (teller.io) and is available on app.vuestash.com with a license. You connect your bank through Teller's secure OAuth flow — VueStash never sees your banking credentials. Transactions are imported automatically and intelligently matched against any entries you have already entered manually. Currently supports thousands of US financial institutions.
- Is my financial data safe in the cloud version?
- Yes. The cloud version uses Dexie Cloud for sync, with data encrypted in transit and at rest. Your data is never used for advertising, profiling, or analytics. You can export everything at any time and are never locked in.
- Can I use VueStash completely offline?
- Yes. private.vuestash.com and the desktop app work fully offline after the first page load. No internet connection is needed for daily use. Your data is stored in your browser's local database (IndexedDB) and never leaves your device.
- What file formats can I import and export?
- Import is free in all versions and supports OFX, QFX, CSV, and JSON — the standard formats exported by most banks and financial tools. Data export to CSV and JSON requires a license and is available in both the local and cloud versions.
- Can I import my data from Mint or YNAB?
- Yes. VueStash supports direct CSV import from Mint and YNAB exports, including multi-account history. Open the Import screen, select your exported file, map your categories, and your full transaction history is imported in seconds — no third-party service or manual conversion needed. Your data never leaves your device during the process.
- What happens when my Time License expires?
- Your data stays intact and the app keeps working. You simply lose access to the licensed features (unlimited accounts, budgets, export, bank sync) until you renew. Nothing is deleted. A Lifetime License never expires and includes all future updates.
- Can I move my data from the local version to the cloud version?
- Yes. Export your data from private.vuestash.com using the JSON export (licensed feature), then import it into app.vuestash.com. The same license key is recognised on both versions.
- Is there a native desktop app?
- Yes — a native desktop app is available for macOS and Windows. It runs the same local version as private.vuestash.com with no login required, and supports the same import/export formats. Download links are on the Releases page.
- Which languages does VueStash support?
- VueStash is available in English, UK English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Hindi, Portuguese, Japanese, Dutch, and Simplified Chinese. The language can be changed in the app settings at any time.
- Does VueStash track my usage or show ads?
- No. VueStash has no usage tracking, no behavioural analytics, and no advertising. The free version is entirely private by design. The cloud version stores your synced data but does not use it for any purpose other than syncing it back to your devices.
